Confusion reigns in the NFL community regarding Rashee Rice’s status for the remainder of the season. On Monday, Adam Schefter reported optimism about the Kansas City Chiefs star wide receiver’s knee injury, suggesting a possible return this season.
“After consulting today with doctors, there’s ‘a lot of optimism’ that standout WR Rashee Rice didn’t suffer a knee injury as significant as first believed, per source,” Schefter initially tweeted. “Rice will be put under anesthesia Tuesday to determine the context of his injury, but the belief now is it could be a ‘much shorter’ recovery timeline than originally thought.”
However, in a swift reversal just five minutes later, Schefter updated his report, casting doubt on Rice’s return: “It’s unlikely that Chiefs WR Rashee Rice will play again this season, but doctors will not know for sure until they perform surgery Tuesday morning, per source,” This abrupt change left fans bewildered, prompting one to comment, “That’s quite the 180 there in 5 minutes, my guy.”
The severity of Chiefs receiver Rice’s knee injury is still up in the air, but given the team’s reaction, he might be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season, including the playoffs. Patrick Mahomes, whose collision with Rice led to the injury, shared his remorse with the media.
The incident took place as Mahomes and the offense were trying to counter the Los Angeles Chargers’ defense following an interception. “When I saw the replay, I felt like —- that I hit Rashee,” Mahomes admitted to reporters.
“I think that’s pretty much all … I mean, I wasn’t really worried about myself. I was worried about, hopefully, his injury, and hopefully that it wasn’t as bad as it looked because I was the one that hit him.”
Mahomes also mentioned that he didn’t realize the extent of Rice’s injury until the game concluded. “No I didn’t notice in the moment, I was more worried about trying to get the ball,” he said. “But yeah, obviously, just trying to make a play. It happens when you’re trying to make tackles.”
There is a growing concern within the Chiefs organization that Rice may have torn his ACL during a recent hit, but the team is waiting for the swelling in his knee to subside before making any decisions. Kansas City’s head coach, Andy Reid, provided further insight into Rice’s injury, stating that the medical team will determine the best course of action.
“We’re really hoping that things work out for the best, but let’s just see where it goes and leave it up to the doctors to see,” Reid told reporters on Thursday. “Rashee’s had a phenomenal year. ” He added, “Unfortunately, in this league injuries happen, and life goes on, so we always expected the next guys to step up and roll, and it’s no different now.

“There’s not another Rashee. There [are] other guys, though, that are very, very good, so we’ll be fine.”
With the Chiefs short on options, star tight end Travis Kelce could potentially receive more passes as the team searches for other wide receivers to fill Rice’s shoes.
